Can we really stop climate change

John Brock thanks God that we can't do anything about climate change. He lists himself only as a geological engineer but his résumé shows that he spent his life working for oil companies. The American Society of Petroleum Geologist was the last of the major scientific organizations to recognize that global warming was caused by man's activity.

Mr. Brock's article is filled with errors and scientific inaccuracies. We can do something about climate change just by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. He is really thanking God that we have not have had the political will to do anything on a notional level about climate change.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Mr. Brock sets up geo-engineering as a straw man. Few scientists think it a feasible way to stop climate change. He ignores the fact that we can do something about climate change just by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.

Mr. Brock’s last two paragraphs are filled with scientific inaccuracies. He claims the Earth has cooled after 1998 but NASA’s data shows that 2005 was the hottest year on record. He claims global warming was caused by sunspots but there is little evidence of an 11 year sunspot cycle in NASA's data.

The evidence for a warm Greenland a thousand years ago is sketchy but it is clear that if the land ice in Greenland and Iceland melt, the sea levels will rise several feet. Referring to the long history of the Earth's cooling and warming cycles is misleading. Never in geological history has trillions and trillions of tons of hydrocarbons been brought to the surface and burned.
