In spite of all the hullabaloo, the Christian Science Monitor says denial of insurance to kids with preexisting conditions will end this year. They say "
Six months from the day the bill was signed (let's see ... that'll be Sept. 23, by our calculation), insurers will no longer be able to exclude children with preexisting conditions from being covered by their family policy. For current policies, that means insurers will have to rescind preexisting-condition exclusions."

Just to be sure, HHS spokesman Nick pappas said: "To ensure that there is no ambiguity on this point, the secretary of HHS is preparing to issue regulations next month making it clear that the term 'preexisting exclusion' applies to both a child's access to a plan and his or her benefits once he or she is in the plan for all plans newly sold in this country six months from today."

Also, according to WEB-MD, Here are answers to some frequent questions about what reform will mean to consumers:
What provisions begin soon?
Starting this year, children up to age 26 would be allowed to remain on their parents' health plan. People with pre-existing medical conditions would be eligible for a new federally funded "high-risk" insurance program. Small businesses could qualify for tax credits of up to 35% of the cost of premiums. Insurance plans would be barred from setting lifetime caps on coverage and would no longer be able to cancel policies when a patient gets sick. Health plans would also be prohibited from excluding pre-existing conditions from coverage for children.

The "Attack the bill" strategy of the right will so back fire. they seem to think there is more bad than good in this bill. Constantly saying "the more the American people learn about this bill the less they'll like it". They are forcing us who debate this topic to post factual proof that they lie! LOL Keep it coming republicans.

Actually, I'm a Republican. But, I think we have to make decisions based on the truth. I can see the need for Health Care Reform and I wish it had included a public option to help hold costs down.

Thanks. I've got a long row to hoe to reform the party. I started a Republican Progressives Group on Newsvine. If you know any Republicans disenchanted with the party leadership, please refer them to it.

This is a great article! Thanks for posting some actual information, rather than some of the scare tactics against the passed health care reform, that I have seen all too often.

Though this was never really a problem, it has been straightened outcompletely:
"After Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius wrote a letter warning insurers against using loopholes to avoid covering children with pre-existing conditions, AHIP President Karen Ignagni wrote back to say insurers will comply with all regulations."

Some insurance companies won't pay for treatment if an infant is born with a defect even if the child was born while the mother was covered. This has to stop!

My wife, who is a Democrat, says that most moderate or progressive Republicans are now Democrats. I can remember when the Republican Party was the champion of people's rights and welfare and I'm trying to work within the party to return it to what used to be its core values.
